Elmhurst IL Shows Off With Elmhurst Green Fest

by Thomas Makinney

I have mentioned in a past blog about Elmhurst's dedication to being a green community. Elmhurst’s beautiful exterior, along with its resident’s strong ideals, begs for it to be a leader in the green movement. This upcoming Saturday July 31st, Elmhurst, IL is ready to really show its green side for the third annual Elmhurst Green Fest!

The town of Elmhurst has made one valiant effort to help you reduce your impact on the environment and contribute to a more sustainable community.

With fun, educational activities, this would be the perfect opportunity to get the kids excited about the environment – and possibly even motivate yourself to be more environmentally sound. There will be eco-friendly product and service exhibits to explore, a recycling drop-off and various presentations and speakers.

The Recycling Boutique is your chance to get rid of un-needed junk in your home, and put it to better use. Floppy discs, bicycles, VCRs, crayons, books, old cell phones - things you would never imagine to be "recyclable material" are in high demand at this event.

Project Green is Elmhurst's program to help residents understand energy usage in the community. They are holding a variety of presentations and activities such as reducing home energy usage, composting tips, kid’s art with recycled materials, Tai Chi, and much more. This organization really has thought of everything!

So this July 31st, take friends, take family, or just take yourself to Wilder Park. Stroll through the exhibits and presentations to a background of live folk music and enter to win door prizes and giveaways. And don't forget to bring all of your recyclables!

The time and energy that the Elmhurst community has put into this festival is astounding. It is a well-thought-out event that is a resource of information and an inspiration to the community. At the same time, it is not surprising at all. We wouldn't expect anything less from the community-involved residents of Elmhurst. If this sounds like you're kind of town, give us a call. We would love to show off our green community.

Elmhurst: Art and Culture Right at Your Fingertips

by Thomas Makinney

Sometimes we forget how lucky we are to live in an area where every amenity and cultural benefit is so readily available. For example, how many communities, especially suburban communities, can say that they are home to their very own Art Museum?

Named the “Best Suburban Art Museum in Chicago” by Chicago Magazine, the Elmhurst Art Museum is a center for visual art that not only holds well recognized art exhibitions such as their recent Smithsonian exhibits, but the art itself is housed in an award winning, nationally recognized building. The Elmhurst Art Museum building was actually originally a house, one of only three homes in the United States designed and built by famed architect Ludwig Mies van der Roche. The building was designed around the house to pay tribute to Mies and is one of the most structurally enticing buildings in DuPage County.

If ever there was a time to explore this Elmhurst artistic gold mine, it would be this summer with all of their upcoming events.

This Saturday, May 1st is Art in the Park Weekend, Elmhurst's 14th Annual event.  A juried show of Fine Art, Craft, and Design, it is a fantastic weekend to find one-of-a-kind handcrafted jewelry, ceramics, photography, sculpture, furniture, glass, fiber works and paintings. This is the kind of event where you never know what new artist you'll discover. On top of it all, live entertainment sets the mood, while an assortment of food from select Elmhurst vendors officially make it a party. There are even family activities running from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm to entertain the kids while you're busy art hunting.

The event will be held on the grounds of the Elmhurst Art Museum and Wilder Park from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

If you are looking for other ways to keep busy this summer, Elmhurst and Dupage County are packed with events and happenings every weekend. We would be more than happy to give you some suggestions or show you around town. This community is just too amazing to keep all to ourselves.
