Your Elmhurst Domicile

by Thomas Makinney

We already wrote about the Elmhurst Art Museum’s exhibition Open House: Art About Home in a previous blog. At this point, though, we wanted to revisit the topic with some events related to the exhibit that might just get you thinking about your own Elmhurst home.

The exhibit runs through April 20th, and is the first effort from new curator, Staci Boris. In addition to the exhibition itself, there are a number of activities scheduled to extend and enrich the experience for young and old alike. Every Saturday from 10am to 2pm the EAM invites families to make their own art inspired by the exhibition during Art on the Run. The activity is included in the price of admission, and is run by museum staff and volunteers. Projects change every two weeks so feel free to stop by more than just once.

On Friday, April 5th at 6:30pm, the museum partners with the Elmhurst Public Library to offer The Book Club, a book discussion based upon the theme of home. The novel in focus will be Alice Hoffman’s Blackbird House, a web of tales centering on a remote farmhouse on Cape Cod through two centuries. Books will be available through the library, and participants are asked to register for the event by calling 630-834-0202.

On Saturday, April 13th at 2pm, Artist-in-Residence Alberto Aguilar will re-introduce you to Elmhurst through Experience Elmhurst in a New Light: A Tour With Alberto Aguilar. Revisit historical events and discover new happenings in our city. The tour is free with the price of admission, but participants are asked to register in advance by calling 630-834-0202. The tour will begin at the museum.

The Open House exhibition was inspired by Mies van der Rohe’s McCormick House, a mid-century modern home that resides on site at the museum. This collection of exhibits gives us an opportunity to think about the experiences, contents, memories and realities of the places we call home.

All of us here at The Gracik Makinney Group are delighted by this exhibition that combines two of our favorite topics – Elmhurst and homes. We love being here in Elmhurst, and we’d love to help you find a home here, too. Stop by the office at 190 North York Road in Elmhurst, or give us a call at 630-441-5570, and let’s get started on realizing your home ownership goals.

Elmhurst Community Update

by Thomas Makinney

There’s always something going on here in Elmhurst, and from time to time we’re happy to share with you the things that we find interesting. This week we’ll take a look at some of the events that may have escaped your notice.

The York Theatre at 150 North York is once again sponsoring its Predict the Oscars contest. From now until February 23rd, choose who you think will win the statues from the list of those nominated by the Academy. The winner of this contest will receive free movies for two for a whole year at any Classic Cinemas location, plus a $200 gift card redeemable at any of the 20 Chicagoland Francesca Restaurants. The twelve second place winners will each receive a movie pass for one for an entire year, and each correct entry in the contest will receive a pair of tickets to the Brookfield Zoo, along with a pair of movie passes. Drop off your ballots at the York Theatre lobby.

Located just above the York Theatre, the Theatre Historical Society of America will open a new exhibit on February 1st called Movies in the Moonlight: the Life and Times of the American Drive-In Movie Theatre. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the drive-in theatre, and the exhibit follows the timeline of its popularity, through its peak in the ‘50s to its current quasi-novelty status. The exhibition’s opening will run from 6 to 8 pm on February 1st, and it is a free event; however, space is limited. RSVP to office@historictheatres.org or call 630-782-1800.

The Elmhurst Historical Museum is extending its exhibit, Elmhurst Goes to the Fair, until April 12th. The exhibit considers three Elmhurst residents – Thomas Barbour Bryan, Caroline Wade, and Dorothy Brush – who where all connected to either the 1893 or 1933-34 fairs. This exhibit is sponsored by the York Theatre. Also coming to the Museum, a new exhibit entitled On the Road to Glory focuses on our own NASCAR driver, Fearless Freddie Lorenzen, winner of the 1965 Daytona 500. The exhibit will run from February 1st through May 19th with an opening reception on the evening of January 31st. Reservations for the opening can be made by email at ehm@elmhurst.org, or by calling 630-833-1457.

There’s always something interesting to do here in Elmhurst, and that’s just one of the reasons we call this home. Why not make it your home, too? All of us here at The Gracik Makinney Real Estate Group are dedicated to providing you the best service possible. Contact us today at 190 North York Road in Elmhurst or at (630) 567-5902.

A New Type of Open House in Elmhurst

by Thomas Makinney

Elmhurst’s McCormick House is back in the news – this time it has inspired a new exhibition at the Elmhurst Art Museum entitled, “Open House: Art About Home”. The home designed by Mies van der Rohe prompted the museum’s newly appointed Chief Curator, Staci Boris, to assemble artists’ representations of homes that are meant to explore the experiences, contents, memories, and realities of today’s homes.

The museum’s new Artist in Residence, Alberto Aguilar, will offer a site-specific installation of “domestic monuments” that incorporates objects borrowed from the homes of area residents. These objects are transformed into public sculptures that describe the exchange between the owner and the artist. Aguilar is a Chicago resident. He received his BFA in 1997, and his MFA in 2001 from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

The exhibition will also include recent work from Gabrielle Garland, Martin Hyers, William Mebane, Alyssa Miserendino, and Ann Toebbe that are intended to focus on the lives within a home and the paraphernalia that goes along with personal space. These works are introduced by a series of house-shaped sculptures by Don Baum.

The exhibition will run from January 19th through April 20th. The Museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Fridays, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. Regular admission is $5 for adults, $3 for students and seniors, and free for children younger than 5. Admission is always free for everyone on Fridays. For more information, visit www.ElmhurstArtMuseum.org.

All of us here at The Gracik Makinney Group love a good open house, and this one hosted by the Elmhurst Art Museum promises to bring new perspectives about the places we call home. Why not make Elmhurst your home, too? With community knowledge, industry experience, and personal dedication, the Gracik Makinney Real Estate Group is the best place to start. On the Move in Elmhurst

by Thomas Makinney

Moving can be a stressful experience, but by focusing on the possibilities waiting for you in your new location, the event becomes much more pleasant. That’s our philosophy here at Gracik Makinney Group as we move into our new offices at 210 North York Road near the intersection with West 3rd. In addition to helping our clients move ahead with their own real estate goals, the Gracik Makinney Group is making this move to better serve our clients. As of December 13, we will be in our new location. Drop by anytime for a visit to see our new digs!

from The Elmhurst Patch

Six Elmhurst homes will be dressed to the nines with whimsical and elegant holiday decor for Elmhurst Memorial Hospital Guild's 36th annual Reindeer Route Housewalk.

This long-standing Elmhurst tradition, coming up this Friday, Dec. 7, serves to make the holidays a little brighter for children who have to stay at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital. Participants are asked to bring a new, unwrapped toy for the hospital's young patients in the emergency and pediatric units who are unable to go home for Christmas.

Tickets are still available! Read more here!

Lighting Up Elmhurst's Winter Nights

by Thomas Makinney

Throughout human history, we’ve found ways to light up the long winter nights, and we’ve created sparkling traditions and customs in the process. For the next several weeks here in Elmhurst, we can enjoy dazzling events that light up the season.

The Museum of Science and Industry began a holiday tradition in 1942 with just one tree dedicated to the Allies of World War II. Today, Christmas Around the World & Holiday of Lights includes a 45-foot tall Grand Tree with more than 30,000 lights and 1,000 ornaments. The event also features 50 smaller trees representing various cultures and holiday traditions from all around the world. Stroll through the trees with intermittent falling “snow” and take in special performances on the Holiday Stage. School choral groups will perform during the week, and ethnic song and dance performances will take place on the weekends throughout the exhibit, which runs from 9:30 a.m. ‘til 4:00 p.m. November 15 through January 6.

The Lincoln Park Zoo presents Zoo Lights throughout the zoo grounds beginning on Friday, November 23 and continuing every Friday through Sunday until December 26. From then, the lights will stay on every night until January 6. In addition to an amazing display of lights, this annual family-oriented event will also offer holiday crafts and activities, animal encounters, 3D displays, live ice carving, carousel and train rides, and a musical light show. Santa will also be on hand for photos until December 23, and the first 1,000 attendees each night will receive holiday specs.

The John Hancock Observatory offers Santa in the Sky every weekend from November 17 through December 24. Featuring Santa and his seasonal helper, Observatory mascot Seemore Miles, the event also includes face painting, holiday activities, free family photos, and one free child’s ticket to the Shedd Aquarium. The cost is free with admission to the Hancock.

Right here in Elmhurst, the Park District invites the public to the annual tree lighting at Wilder Park, and also to “join the holiday spirit in an old-fashioned celebration.” From 6 – 8 pm on December 6, participants can decorate a holiday tree of their choice in the park. Pre-registration is required for decorating; go to the Wagner Community Center (630-993-8901) to select your tree and register. On the night there will be entertainment, treats, and a visit from Santa. The district will also be collecting non-perishable food items for the local pantry.

Elmhurst’s location as a suburb of Chicago gives us the best of both worlds. We enjoy the benefits of both a vibrant metropolitan lifestyle and a small city’s sense of community. The Gracik Makinney Real Estate Group can help you take advantage of this, too. With community knowledge, industry experience, and personal dedication, our team is the best place to start on the road to home ownership in Elmhurst. Contact us today at 540 South York St. in Elmhurst, or at (630) 567-5902. Please note also that we are moving in early December to 210 N. York Rd., Elmhurst.
